Researching Spoken Language

Quite an interesting starting-point for research into language is to get students to have a look at the Urban Dictionary website, and pick out some definitions and proposed etymologies of the slang terms (make sure you choose carefully--or censor it appropriately!)

Once you have a list of a few terms, you can ask students to guess what they mean, or guess the etymology, giving a few fake answers, in a suitably 'Call My Bluff' style. This episode on youtube can be a good introduction to the method.
